Metaphors are a unique part of a Katonah Yoga practice. By engaging their imagination throughout this series, students of all levels will begin to know their Body as a House and develop an understanding of the archetypal abode, three floors, nine rooms, and ten doors.
Katonah Yoga is a syncretic hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist principles, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination - in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being.
Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function and developing a sense of personal measures are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices.
Katonah Yoga is organized around three principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern belies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight. Disciplined techniques are organized for revelation through revolutions.
Each class in the series will open with a brief discussion on the topic The Body as a House, followed by a 60 minute Katonah Yoga asana practice where we will engage the mind to allow participation in the metaphors. Themes in asana and discussion will cover; scaffolding the foundation/wringing out the clutter + setting up good sleeping conditions, staying healthy with the seasons, moving away from the personal to the technical aspects of maintaining ones’ home and developing insight into how you hold yourself together. What we do in the mind, we do in the body, they are interconnected. To manipulate the body, we manipulate the mind.
